Modern Stewart of Atholl Heavy Weight Tartan. The old Earldom of Atholl was held by several of the Royal Stewarts. King James III conferred the Earldom on his half-brother, Sir John Stewart of Belveny. The daughter and heiress of the 6th Earl married the 2nd Earl of Tullibardines. The Earl became the Earl of Atholl, but retained his surname of Murray. The Stewarts of Atholl were strong and powerful and were extremely loyal to the Royal house of Stewart. They fought at the Battle of Killiecrankie under Viscount Dundee, and during the Jacobite Rising of 1745 they formed part of the right wing of the Jacobite army at the Battle of Culloden in April, 1746.
