The Cummings (or Comyns to use the ancient spelling) were of Norman descent and the progenitor of the clan was Richard Comyn who came to Scotland in the 12th century. His descendant, Sir John, Lord of Badenoch, was known as the "Red Coymn" and his son as the "Black Comyn". The "Black Comyn" was one of the competitors for the crown of Scotland in 1296. Their opposition to King Robert the Bruce led to their extermination and the Cummings of Altyre became the chief branch. They took an active part in public affairs and engaged in clan warfare. In 1657 Robert of Altyre married a daughter of Sir Ludovick Gordon of Gordonstoun, and his great-grandson, who was created a baronet in 1804, took the name of Gordon-Cumming.
